Lake Akan, in eastern Hokkaido, is home to Akanko Ainu Kotan—kotan being the Ainu word for "village"—where approximately 120 Ainu people live today. In a beautiful yet unforgiving landscape, where summer temperatures rise above 30°C (86°F) and winter lows plunge to −20°C (−4°F), the Ainu of Lake Akan lead contemporary lives alongside an abundance of plants and wildlife.
In 2019, the Ainu Policy Promotion Act came into force, explicitly recognizing the Ainu as the Indigenous people of Hokkaido. Yet in Japan, their history and culture are still little understood.
Rather than go through life without knowing, we want to keep learning.
In the Ainu language, utasa means "to intersect" or "to come together."
The Utasa Festival is designed to be a starting point: a way for more people to discover the joy of Ainu culture. That is why we have archived every past live performance online. The door is always open, whenever you are ready.
In February 2020, the inaugural Utasa Festival was held on a stage set atop the frozen surface of Lake Akan.Shortly afterward, the pandemic arrived. In 2021 and 2022, the festival was held without a live audience and streamed online. In 2023,
it welcomed a limited number of guests while reaching people primarily online. In 2024, stepping away from Lake Akan, the festival moved to Miyako Island in Okinawa,
where the Ainu of Lake Akan joined singers from Miyako to present Utasa Myahk.
After a brief hiatus, the Utasa Festival returns to Lake Akan on January 23, 2027—the first time in four years that it will be held at its birthplace. You don't need to know everything to begin. Start with a collaborative session by an artist who sparks your curiosity, and experience the living culture of the Ainu.
